Michael was raised in Greenville and Sharon, Pennsylvania, the son of a Vietnam veteran. From an early age, he was determined to follow his family’s tradition of military service by becoming a Marine. Athletic and driven, he excelled in combat sports—wrestling in high school and winning several amateur boxing titles in Ohio. Though tough in the ring, he was known for his kindness and warm heart. He graduated from Sharon High School in 1995 and enjoyed football, motorcycles, and video games. A knee injury from wrestling initially delayed his enlistment, but after surgery and recovery, he persisted and joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1999.
He served on active duty at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, until 2003, then moved to Phoenix, Arizona. There, he began college studies and continued serving in the Marine Reserves with Bulk Fuel Company C, 6th Engineer Support Battalion, at Luke Air Force Base. In January 2005, he volunteered for deployment to Iraq, where he was attached to the 3rd Battalion, 25th Regiment, 4th Marine Division, under the 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward). On May 7, 2005, Michael was killed by an improvised explosive device during combat operations in Haditha, Iraq.
His legacy lives on through his family, friends, and comrades. A local VA outpatient clinic now bears his name in honor of his service.
