Russell was raised in Washington, Pennsylvania, and graduated with high honors from Avella High School in 1998. A well-rounded and active young man, he played basketball and was deeply involved in his community. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, landscaping, gardening, and cooking. He also played in dartball and pool leagues, bowled regularly, and competed in roller hockey and frisbee golf. A devoted fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates, he gave generously of his time to his church, helping with youth programs and cooking for the annual Thanksgiving dinner.
While still a senior in high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served a two-year contract. In 2006, he joined the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. Two years later, he deployed to Iraq as a combat engineer with Company A, 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 28th Infantry Division. Driving point in a Husky vehicle, he was responsible for detecting improvised explosive devices. His superiors trusted his judgment, often allowing him to set the mission’s pace. He missed only one device during his tour—fortunately without injury—a testament to his vigilance and steady hand under pressure.
He passed away on July 23, 2012, but his legacy endures in the lives he touched: family, friends, fellow service members, and his church community. In recognition of his service and sacrifice, Exit 17 on Interstate 70 in Washington, Pennsylvania, was renamed the Sergeant Russell Crupe Jr. Memorial Exit.
