Pat grew up in western Pennsylvania and graduated from Montour High School in 2000, where he earned all-state honors in volleyball. He led the team to several championships and returned after graduation to coach for three years. He was known for his sharp wit and sense of humor.

In October 2003, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and attended basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia. After completing the Special Forces Qualification Course at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in 2004, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group in Stuttgart, Germany. He deployed to multiple locations in support of the Global War on Terrorism. On his first deployment to Afghanistan in 2007, his vehicle was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade and came under small-arms fire in the Tagab district. He died of his wounds on November 10 at Bagram Airfield.

To honor his sacrifice, Forward Operating Base Pathfinder—where he had been stationed—was renamed FOB Kutschbach on January 28, 2008. Located deep in Taliban territory, the base became a key site for counterinsurgency operations and training Afghan national security forces.

Pat’s legacy lives on through his wife, Ginger; his son, Bastian; his extended family; and his many friends and fellow soldiers. In 2023, he was posthumously inducted into the Montour School District’s Distinguished Wall of Honor.
