Chris grew up in Tucson, Arizona, where he quickly stood out as an exceptional athlete. At Tucson High School, he excelled in football and baseball, earning the title of Southern Arizona Baseball Player of the Year in 2006. As a senior, he posted a .462 batting average and an 8–2 pitching record with a 1.21 ERA, drawing attention from major league scouts. Drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 2007, he instead chose to pursue his dream of playing for the University of Arizona. After just one semester, however, he felt called to serve a greater purpose. Guided by faith and a deep desire to help others, he made the difficult decision to leave baseball and enlist in the U.S. Army.
He joined the Army in 2008 and was assigned as an infantryman to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He volunteered for sniper school and joined the Scout Sniper team before deploying to Afghanistan in 2010. On July 6, during a mission in the Arghandab River Valley, his patrol was struck by an improvised explosive device. He was critically wounded and died a week later, on July 13, at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.
His legacy endures through his family, friends, and fellow soldiers. In March 2017, a statue honoring him was unveiled at Cherry Field, beside Tucson High’s baseball diamonds. Sculpted by Ann LaRose, the statue stands above a plaque that reads SPC. CHRISTOPHER J. MOON MEMORIAL. Each year, Tucson High hosts the Chris Moon Memorial Invitational at Cherry Field in his memory.
