Jason grew up in Brandon, Mississippi, and graduated from Brandon High School in 2000. He loved the outdoors, especially playing basketball and baseball with friends. Known for his sharp style and quick wit, he was a practical joker who delighted in making people laugh. After the fall of the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001, Jason felt a calling to serve his country, determined to protect the freedoms he cherished and that so many of us often take for granted.
He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 2003 and completed recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina. He then attended Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger and Basic Engineer School at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His first assignment was with the Combat Assault Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, at Camp Hansen in Okinawa, Japan. In 2005, he transferred to the 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, at Camp Lejeune. Over eight years of service, he deployed overseas six times, including five combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. On April 7, 2011, Jason was killed by an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
His legacy lives on through his wife, Angie, his family, friends, fellow Marines, and the SSgt. Jason A. Rogers Memorial Foundation, which awards scholarships to high school seniors in Rankin County, Mississippi.
