Casey was an adventurous and thoughtful young man who grew up in western Pennsylvania. Even as a child, he showed a deep curiosity about the world, particularly through his love of history. In high school, Casey was actively involved in JROTC and took part in youth programs at his church, where his father served as pastor.

In July 2010, Casey enlisted in the U.S. Army. His family witnessed a striking transformation as he graduated from basic training—a young adult becoming a man with purpose. He was assigned to the 919th Engineer Unit (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and found great fulfillment in his role as a paratrooper. In May 2011, he was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma. For sixteen months, he battled the aggressive cancer with chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation. Despite his illness, he remained committed to his comrades. He passed away on September 4, 2012, just one month before his unit deployed to Afghanistan.

Casey’s final words to his commanding officer were, “Take care of the unit, Sir, and bring them home safe.” This selfless farewell captured the essence of who he was. In recognition of his sacrifice, his unit’s combat outpost in Kunduz Province was renamed in his honor. Today, his legacy lives on through the memories and actions of his family, friends, and fellow soldiers—those inspired by his courage, humility, and devotion to something greater than himself.
