Shawn was born and raised in Orange City, Iowa. An independent young man, he was an avid reader who embraced both physical and intellectual challenges. In high school, he played football, wrestled, and joined the chess club. He earned an associate degree in applied science from Northwest Iowa Community College.
In 2007, Shawn enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated as an expert marksman and honor graduate, finishing in the top 3% of his class. He was then stationed at Aviano Air Base in Italy, where he served for two years. During that time, he deployed to Kuwait and Iraq, conducting special missions and serving in the honor guard alongside his regular duties. After returning to the U.S. in 2009, he was stationed at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois and continued his honor guard service. He later volunteered for a tour in Afghanistan, embedding with an Army unit based out of Langley, Virginia. There, he trained Afghan National Police and managed ammunition accountability, earning recognition for exceptional meritorious service.
Honorably discharged in March 2013, Shawn joined the Air Force Reserve and began studying chemistry and mathematics at McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois. His goal was to attend medical school and return to the Air Force as a physician, focusing on serving wounded and disabled veterans by advancing prosthetic technology. Shawn died unexpectedly on April 18, 2013.
His legacy endures through his family, friends, and fellow service members.
