Israel was born in Nayarit, Mexico, and moved to Long Beach, California, when he was two. He grew up playing soccer and developed a lifelong passion for horses. At Long Beach Polytechnic High School, he was known for his warm personality and infectious joy. After graduating in 2002, he married his high school sweetheart, Lesly. Not long after, the couple moved to Vicenza, Italy, where he was stationed with the U.S. Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team.

He enlisted in October 2002 and joined Company C, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne). In 2007, he deployed to Afghanistan. On July 13, 2008, during the Battle of Wanat at Combat Outpost Kahler in Kunar Province, he showed exceptional courage under fire. Moving through heavy gunfire to support fellow soldiers, he was killed in action. For his bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Silver Star. He is remembered for his courage, leadership, and loyalty.

His legacy endures through his family, friends, and fellow soldiers. At Long Beach Polytechnic High School, a memorial bench honors his life and sacrifice.
