James grew up in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 2004. An Eagle Scout and avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing. He was known for his quick wit, loyalty, and strong leadership.
In 2006, James joined the U.S. Army Reserve and transitioned to active duty in 2009. He deployed to Afghanistan with the 4-320th Field Artillery Regiment, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His second deployment was with the 1-84th Field Artillery Regiment of the 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Baumholder, Germany. His final assignment was with Headquarters Battalion, 101st Division Artillery, 101st Airborne Division, at Fort Campbell.
James died in a motorcycle accident on March 15, 2015, while serving stateside. His legacy lives on through his wife, Lacey; extended family, friends, and fellow soldiers.
