U.S. Marine Corps

J.P. grew up in Southern California and graduated from Flintridge Preparatory School in La Cañada in 1999. He excelled both academically and athletically, earning letters in football, track and field, and soccer. As the starting quarterback, he was known for his strong arm and leadership. In track, he was named the league’s Most Valuable Athlete and won a championship in the 400-meter relay.

He received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, where he played wide receiver on the Navy football team for four years. He graduated in 2003 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. After completing The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia—ranking in the top 5% of his class—he finished the Infantry Officer Course and was assigned to Echo Company, 2nd Platoon, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment at Camp Pendleton. In September 2004, his unit deployed to Ar Ramadi, Iraq, and soon joined Operation Phantom Fury in Fallujah. On November 11, 2004, J.P. was killed by small arms fire while leading his platoon in house-to-house combat.

His legacy lives on through his family, friends, and fellow Marines. The J.P. Blecksmith Leadership Foundation carries his name forward, inspiring and supporting future leaders.
