Darrell W.

Boatman

,

U.S. Marine Corps

Darrell grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in a military family. His father served in the U.S. Army and completed four tours in Vietnam. Inspired by his father’s example, Darrell enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1985.

He served proudly for 20 years as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician. His career included deployments to Kosovo, the Persian Gulf, and Iraq. He was assigned to the 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. On his third tour in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, he was conducting combat operations near Habbaniyah, Iraq, when he was critically wounded by an improvised explosive device. He died from his injuries two days later, on November 4, 2005, at
Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. He was laid to rest beside his father in Arlington National Cemetery.

His legacy lives on through his wife, Michelle; their children, Lauren, Jacob, and Brent; and the many family members, friends, and fellow Marines whose lives he touched. In tribute to his service and sacrifice, the town of North Topsail Beach, North Carolina, renamed a street “GySgt D.W. Boatman Drive” and holds an annual Veterans Day ceremony in his honor.
