John grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he stood out for his determination, discipline, and leadership. By age 12, he had earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. At Minnehaha Academy, he excelled both academically and athletically, graduating as valedictorian in 1998 while also leading the football team as captain and quarterback. Though he had his pick of top universities, he was drawn to a greater purpose—serving his country as a Navy SEAL.
Shortly after graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He completed basic training and Information Systems Technician School at Great Lakes, Illinois, before beginning BUD/S training at Coronado. After graduating with Class 251, he completed SEAL Qualification Training and Jump School, ultimately earning his Trident. He served with SEAL Team 8 and later with the elite Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU), deploying multiple times to Afghanistan and Iraq. On August 6, 2011, he was among 30 American military personnel who lost their lives when Extortion 17 was shot down in the Tangi Valley of Wardak Province, southwest of Kabul. His distinguished service was recognized with numerous commendations, including the Silver Star.
His legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the values he embodied. The John Faas Scholarship Fund at Minnehaha Academy supports students who reflect his integrity and leadership. His life remains a powerful example of courage, service, and selflessness.
